Proceeds to Benefit Survivors of the Shield. Survivors of the Shield was founded in 1988 to provide support and assistance to the spouses and children of New York City police officers killed in the performance of their duty. The Survivors of the Shield (SOS) came together through the efforts of three police widows, Kathleen Murray, Mary Beth O'Neill, and Susan McCormack. Survivors of the Shield (SOS) is a not for profit organization that must rely on the generosity of contributors to continue its efforts to bring police survivors together, to offer support sessions, college scholarships to children not eligible for assistance, and financial assistance to families receiving nominal pensions affected by inflation. Three days of racing followed by post race parties and dinners.
